Another Video Game Movie

sonic movie

Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Spoiler alert! My next few blog posts will be Sonic related. And if you are a movie goer you should know why. Yes the movie Sonic The Hedgehog will be making it’s way to theaters this weekend. And it’s been surrounded by a whole lot of controversy. Let me tell you. If they were to put this movie out ten years ago it probably would’ve been one of the worse movies ever made. But since the producers listened to the fans they saved themselves. See social media can be used for good….. sometimes. LOL! But in this case the people over at Paramount Pictures did the right thing.

Now I don’t want to get into a history lesson but video games going to the big screen hasn’t gone very well. With the exception of the Resident Evil series, the Tomb Raider series and the Mortal Kombat series what video game movie has been a success? Maybe they’ve made a lot of money worldwide at the box office but look at Rotten Tomatoes or their Metacritic scores. Let’s go through some of these films for a moment. Was Doom really a good movie? Need For Speed. With all the other racing/car movies that have come out I think they were a bit late to the big screen. House of The Dead is much better to watch at the arcade as opposed to the movie theater. Street Fighter. God awful movie. Double Dragon wasn’t much better. And to cap it all off Super Mario Bros.. As a Mario fan it pains me to say it but that has to be one of the worse movies ever made.

sonic poster

Now when I saw the original poster for the Sonic movie it didn’t look good. Even though you couldn’t see him fully once you did see him you know there was going to be some criticism. Fast forward to that original trailer. We all know it broke the internet. Forget just some criticism there was a lot of criticism. People were complaining that it wasn’t Sonic. And it wasn’t. It was very bad. This movie had disaster written all over it. And it seemed like the producers were really trying to make another Super Mario Bros. film. Have people not learned? Luckily Paramount Pictures did the right thing and said they are going to redesign Sonic. And make him look the right way. They had to push the movie back because of it. But in the end they saved themselves from putting out one of the worst films ever.

sonic redesign

Now the redesign may not be to everyone’s liking but it’s a helluva lot better than what they were going to do originally. Now I really wasn’t planning on seeing this film when it was first announced but since the producers listened to the fans I feel a bit obligated to see this film. It’s not everyday where you see film producers take advice and listen to the fans. So kudos to Paramount Pictures for doing the right thing. I’ll check the movie out sometime this weekend. I’m not going to write a review about it on the blog here but I’ll give some thoughts about it on Twitter. So if you don’t follow me on there you really need to do so.

So do you plan on watching Sonic The Hedgehog. If so are you excited? If not? Explain why not. Leave comments below and I’ll respond. Until next time. Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Remember that TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE! Thanks for reading folks. More content is coming at ‘cha.

  1. With regards to the “has there ever been a successful video game movie?” discussion, Detective Pikachu made over $430 million (box office record for video game movies) and has a positive Rotten Tomatoes reviewer and audience score.

Not to say that this will usher in a new era of successful video game movies, but it does buck the trend you imply about video game movies failing to achieve both critical and box office success.

    1. I didn’t see Detective Pikakchu but I heard nothing but good things about it. It killed it in the box office.

Overall I do want to see these video game movies do well. Do I think Sonic can be a success? I think so. The nostalgia for guys like us. He’s still popular among the kids. And most importantly they fixed him. I think it’ll have a strong opening weekend. Plan on seeing it Jett?

      1. Good video game movies are a win for everyone. Detective Pikachu may not be the most amazing movie of all-time, but it proves that we can do quality gaming movies that are also a financial success.

We’ll see about Sonic. Fixing the design is a huge win, but we’ll see if it fares will with reviewers and audiences. Though I played Sonic back in the day, I certainly don’t have a strong affinity for the character. In no rush to see it.

        Looking forward to your review!
