Video Game Character Focus #2: Donkey Kong Jr.

Donkey Kong Junior

Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! For this Character Focus I wanted to focus on a video game character that I feel is hardly ever talked about. That character is Donkey Kong Jr. It’s interesting and yet confusing at the same time. I’ve heard a few stories of what happened to Donkey Kong Jr. The most famous one is that he is the current Donkey Kong. And that the original Donkey Kong is now Cranky Kong. But I’m confused as to whether he is the current Donkey Kong or the father of the current Donkey Kong. Confusing I know.

So Donkey Kong Jr. first made his appearance in Donkey Kong Jr. In this game he’s the protagonist having to save his father from the evil clutches of Mario. Mario evil! Who knew? He’s also has made appearances in games suchs as Donkey Kong for Game Boy (also known as Donkey Kong ’94), Mario’s Time Machine, Punch-Out!!, and a few others. But the game I feel that he really shines in is Super Mario Kart. I’ve always wondered why Nintendo went with him as opposed to other characters. Maybe they could’ve started using Link a lot sooner in the Mario Kart series. LOL! I don’t know. He was my favorite character to use in that racing game. He may have started out slow but he could get up to high speeds. He really should make comeback in the Mario Kart series.

He’s also playable in two tennis games. Mario’s Tennis for the Virtual Boy and Mario Tennis for the N64. Now I didn’t have a Virtual Boy but I did have an N64. He’s a secret character from what I remember. I forget how you unlock him but I would play as him all the time once I did unlock him. In this game he is quite a small compared to Donkey Kong. Aside from that game I can’t think of any other game that he’s been in where he is a playable character.

No I feel that he should be brought back in one form or another. Nintendo should either find a way to add him to the Donkey Kong Country series. Now this may be tough since Donkey Kong’s main sidekick is Diddy Kong. If that can’t happen then he should be brought back into one of the Mario games. Whether it is the next Mario Kart, a Mario sports game, a Mario Party game, etc,. This character I feel is a forgotten character of not only the Donkey Kong games but Nintendo in general. But I feel that there is potential to bring this character back. So come Nintendo! LOL!

Anyway people what did you guys think of Donkey Kong Jr.? Were you a fan? Was he one of your favorite playable characters? Do you miss him? Would you like to see him make a comeback? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time! Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Remember that TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE! Thanks for reading folks! Keep gaming gamerz!

  1. Thanks for the fun fact!

I didn’t know about the case of Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong, and Cranky Kong.

But I do remember back in the day when Universal sued Nintendo because they mistook Donkey Kong for King Kong.

And Mario owes his name to Donkey Kong Jr.

During the time of Donkey Kong, he was known as “Jumpman”.

When Donkey Kong Jr. was under development, Mario was inspired from the Italian landlord, Mario Segale.
