I see a lot of Super Smash Bros. fans and Waluigi fans a like are upset that Waluigi is an assist trophy and not a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I told myself I wouldn’t do a whole post about this but then some questions started rambling through my head and now here we are. How can a video game character go from being real annoying and even hated by fans to fans wanting him in a Super Smash Bros. game? I don’t understand it. So I decided to go through the history of Waluigi and at the end of this post determine whether or not he really should be a playable character in the upcoming Smash Bros. game.
So Waluigi came about in 2000. His debut game was Mario Tennis for the N64. I heard he was only created because Wario needed a doubles partner. I guess pairing Wario up with Bowser would’ve been a bad combo. Waluigi would go on to appear in other games such as Mario Party 3, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, and one of my personal favorites Mario: Superstar Baseball. I liked using him quite a bit in Mario: Superstar Baseball because he was the best pitcher in that game. I didn’t really care to use in Mario Kart games. After Mario Party 2 I kind of started to lose interest in the Mario Party series, and with the exception of the baseball game, and Mario 3-on-3 Hoops I really never cared too much for any of the Mario Sports games. And this guy since Mario Tennis has been in every single one of them. But if you think about it he has yet to be in a Mario adventure game. He was one of the antagonists in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix but that doesn’t count. He hasn’t even been in a WarioWare game. And that’s his main guy right?
So what has this guy done to deserve to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Has this guy just grown on people over the years? And if he has how? Why? This is what I don’t understand when it comes to Waluigi. Has he just been around long enough to the point where fans are just like “he’s here to stay put him in already”. Or did he actually do something significant. That’s what I’m trying to figure out here. I mean look at him. He’s just really tall and lanky. I kind of don’t really like his design all that much. He kind of reminds me of Dick Dastardly from those old Hanna-Barbara cartoons such as Wacky Races and Dastardly & Muttley In Their Flying Machines. Take a look at the picture below and you be judge.
So apparently Nintendo has heard the outcry for Waluigi not being in the game and they are fully aware of this. But don’t go bashing the creator Sakurai on Twitter now folks. There are other ways to let them know if you really want this guy in the game. I’ve actually been hearing rumors that there are more characters to be announced. When they’ll be announced I have no idea. And who knows. Maybe they’ll put out some DLC and let some of the assist trophies be playable. If they do that can they add Knuckles to that list?
Anyway it’s hard for me to believe I did a whole post on Waluigi but I did. Now I want to know what do you guys think? Should Waluigi stay as an assist trophy or should he be playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Does he deserve to be a playable character? Let me know in the comments below.
