Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Microtransactions have been a big topic in gaming lately! One thing I want to know is if people are ok with them, are they ruining gaming, is it a form of gambling, and if they are going away anytime soon. I have some strong opinions on this topic so let me jump right in and share how I’m feeling about it.
Let’s start with what microtranscations are. They are a business model or program that allow the user or player to purchase virtual goods via micropayment (or small payment). They are typically used more in freemium mobile games such as Clash of Clans, Asphalt Xtreme, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius just to name a few. They are free games with in-app purchases. Those are examples of games with microtransactions and they’ve been around for years now. They however also exist in PC games and console games. In multiplayer games some people have been known to call them pay to win in some instances. Though that is not always the case.
In my opinion depending upon the situation microtransactions can be helpful but they can also be a waste of money. To me on if I’m playing a mobile game that has microtransactions it’s a waste of money to me because I have consoles and handhelds I can play games on. And chances are they are much better than what I can play on my mobile. phone. But if your mobile phone is your primary choice for gaming it is useful. And at the end of the day it is helping support the developers of that game. Now let’s go to the PC and console side of things. Let’s say you get a triple A multiplayer game and you want to purchase a particular skin for a weapon or costume. I’m just using this as an example. I don’t necessarily have a problem with it since it is not changing your ability in how you compete or ranking you all the way to max level. Now let’s say you want to get a more powerful weapon (or a chance at a more powerful weapon). That is paying to win and that I do have a problem with. The reason why I have a problem with this is because I feel like it is ruining the integrity in how we play games. It takes the fun out of games and in my honest opinion do you really have to go that route to pay to win. I know some of you out there may disagree with me but if you are paying to win in a particular game just think to yourself. Is this a game I should really be playing? Those are my thoughts on that we can agree to disagree.
From what I’ve been reading on the internet a lot of people really don’t have problem with microtransactions. Some do think the pay to win or loot box scheme (whatever you want to call it) is horrible but for the most part people seem to be fine with it. Did this topic get a lot of attention because of a particular game (Star Wars: Battlefront 2) or were people really having a problem with them before then. I’m sure Battlefront 2 got it a lot more attention to the point where politicians got involved. Now the question is ‘Are loot boxes a form of gambling?’. I personally don’t think they are going away anytime soon but with congress getting involved I’m sure something will change. If you want to know why video games have ratings now it was congress telling the gaming industry to come up with something or we’ll do it for you. If you ask me I think it is hilarious that it took a very popular franchise for people to start talking about this topic more. It made you think something was going to indeed change only to have people come out and say I don’t have a problem with it. At end of the day it’s your money and you choose how you want to use it. Me personally I will buy dlc, and microtransaction that doesn’t affect my ability to win. But if it comes to paying to win I’m not buying them.
Well enough of me and more of you. I’m sure everyone in gaming from the developers to the players has a hot take on microtransactions. How do you the people feel about them?
