Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Here’s a phrase everyone’s heard at one point or another. “It’s on like Donkey Kong!”. We’ve seen or heard it said on commercials, in movies, and even by everyday people. Just YouTube it and you’re guaranteed to find someone saying “It’s on like Donkey Kong!”. But where does it come from. Who said it first? It certainly wasn’t Nintendo. I’m surprised that they waited until many years later to file a trademark for the phrase. But would you believe that the person who said it first also first said the phrase “Bye Felecia!”.
Yes it was rapper O’Shea Jackson better known as Ice Cube who said the phrase first. He said it in a rap off of his 1992 Predator album on the song “Now I Gotta Wet ‘Cha”. It’s a very good CD by the way. You should take a listen if you get the chance. I’ll leave a YouTube video at the end of the post for the song. But I’m very intrigued by the fact that very phrase people have heard over the years was from a song that probably not a whole lot of people have ever heard. The song wasn’t one of Cube’s radio hits. But Ice Cube in my opinion is a genius. Love him or hate him he is a very smart man and has come a very long way in his career. Here’s a video below of him a few years back on Late Night With Seth Meyers discussing the phrase along with “Bye Felecia!”.
If you try to look anywhere for the phrase being said before 1992 good luck. Because he said it first. People have just reused it over the years. And like I said before the song wasn’t on the radio so whoever said it after Cube said it must’ve been a big Ice Cube fan. I probably shocked a lot of you right now with this news.
The reason why I wanted to share this with you guys is because tomorrow Nov. 7th my piece for The Games That Define Us will drop over on Normal Happenings. The game I’m doing for it is Donkey Kong Country. So I thought it would be a good idea to talk about some Donkey Kong history with you guys and what better way than the phrase “It’s On like Donkey Kong!”. The funny thing is I listened to a lot of Ice Cube when I was younger and when I hear that first verse in the song “Now I Gotta Wet ‘Cha” I still find it shocking that he was the one who said it first. That is very remarkable. Keep doing what you do Cube.
Anyway be sure to check out Normal Happenings and see the rest of the awesome bloggers who are participating in this big blog collaboration The Games That Define Us. You’ll find out why Donkey Kong Country best describes me. Anyway do any of you readers ever say “It’s On Like Donkey Kong!”? What do you guys think of it? I wanna know. Let me know in the comments below. Until next time blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Remember that TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE! Thanks for reading folks. Here’s the edited version of Ice Cube’s “Now I Gotta Wet ‘Cha”.
