Video Game Character Focus #1: The Koopalings

Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! So with this blog post I wanted to experiment with some new type of content. I will definitely want some kind of feedback so leave me comments definitely or DM me on Twitter if you like. I want to discuss video game characters including who they are, their history, where they are at currently and where I would like to see them in the future. I really had to think about the first character (or characters) I was going to do. After much thinking I decided to go with the Koopalings also known as the Koopa Kids. For those that don’t know they are common enemies of Mario in the Super Mario series. They act as bosses for the most part.

Now for this post I’m going with the Seven Koopalings. I’m not including Bowser Jr.. Let’s start with their names. Ludwig von Koopa, Lemmy Koopa, Roy Koopa, Iggy Koopa, Wendy O. Koopa, Morton Koopa Jr., and Larry Koopa. One of the unique things about their names is that they are named after musicians if you can tell. Pretty cool huh? They made their video game debut in Super Mario Bros. 3. They were also on the cartoon shows The New Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World. However on the cartoon shows their names were changed (for whatever reason) but they are pretty much the same characters from the video games.

Now one of the weird things about these guys is that they went on a long hiatus from the mainstream Super Mario games. They did appear in Mario spin-off games such as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Yoshi Safari, and Mario Is Missing. But in terms of a Super Mario game they wouldn’t make another appearance after Super Mario World until New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Now this has always been kind of head scratcher to me. I would’ve loved to see them in games like Super Mario RPG: Legend of The Seven Stars, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and any other 3D Mario game. An appearance in Mario Party would’ve been nice too. But Nintendo really seemed to keep them on a low profile for years. I know they had sporadic appearances until their “official” comeback but I honestly thought that Nintendo had forgotten about these guys.

Games that they are in these days include the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the upcoming Mario & Luigi: Bower’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey, and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (where you can play as them). They are also playable in MarioKart 8 (and Deluxe), the previous Super Smash Bros. game  and Mario & Sonic At The Rio Olympic Games 2016. It’s great to see that they are sticking around in Mario games and hopefully won’t be going anywhere. I would like to see them in Mario Party game though. Come on Nintendo!

Aside from the upcoming games they are going to be in I would love to see them make an appearance in a Super Mario Maker 2. Hopefully they don’t port this game but if they do port hopefully they give us some additional options. And it would be cool to see how the Koopalings would look in an NES format. Being DLC for Super Mario Party wouldn’t hurt either. Once again come on Nintendo!

Even though they are antagonist I always had fun defeating them in the Mario games I’ve played over the years. My favorite Koopaling is Roy. I liked how he always had pink and his shades are just classic. Anyway are any of you out there fans of the Koopalings? Do you have any games you really enjoy them in? Which games would you like to see them in next? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time! Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Remember that TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE! Thanks for reading folks. And let me know your thoughts.

  1. The weirdest thing about the Koopalings to me is their inconsistent parentage. They are introduced as Bowser’s kids, they disappear for ages, and then when they come back they…aren’t his kids? Nintendo just retconned that whole aspect of them, for some reason. I guess they thought that Bowser being a single dad to one kid was more realistic than eight? I don’t know.
