PlayStation Classic Announced! My Thoughts!

Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! So Sony wants to get in on the nostalgia fun all of a sudden? They want nostalgia money? LOL! According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony will be putting out a PlayStation Classic with 20 pre-loaded games. Five of these games have been announced which are Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash, and Wild Arms. It will be sold at MSRP of $99.99 in the US, and it will hit stores on December 3rd. A few days before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I just have one question! Why is Sony doing this?

Now for $100 and only 20 games there better be some hidden games on this thing. At least with the NES and SNES Classics they gave you more games and they were cheaper. Now I understand that the PlayStation is more powerful than both of those consoles but I’m sure they could’ve gotten a bigger hard drive and made this thing less than $100. Maybe $90 at the most. Anyway let’s look at what Sony is doing so far with this. It appears that the controllers will be wired. But I’m pretty sure a 3rd party company will make some kind of wireless feature so no need to worry there if you hate wired controllers. But a real deal breaker for me is the fact that they are using the original controllers. No analog stick controllers. That totally sucks. And they need to hurry and announce the rest of these games. Come on Sony Final Fantasy VII? Seriously? I can play that game on my phone. LOL! I don’t know what Sony is trying to get at here. They really don’t need to do this. It’s not going to do nearly as well as the NES and SNES Classics I feel. Nintendo is the king of handheld and the king of nostalgia when it comes to gaming. And that’s what these classic plug and play consoles are all about. Nostalgia!

I feel that Sony shouldn’t be doing this but since they are doing this it should be better I feel. They shouldn’t be doing this because they have nothing to prove. They are winning the console wars right now. The only thing that would make all of their fans happy is if they would just say yes to cross-platform play. How they could make this better? Make the controllers wireless, use the analog controllers, and add more games. And make an online store so we could add more games. But someone will probably hack this thing within the first week of it being out. I’m sure someone is already working on that! LOL!

Now for me personally growing up I did get a PS1 late in the console’s life cycle. I was a big Nintendo fan boy in my youth but I did eventually get one. Looking back it did sell more units than the NES and SNES. Will it outsell them as plug and plays though? I feel that Sony is doing a Nintendo move by doing this. Nintendo had to do this. With Virtual Console not on the Switch this was an alternative if you want to play Nintendo Classics. You can play PS1 Classics on the PS4. Another reason why Nintendo did what they did was because after the failure that was Wii U they wanted people talking about them again and they sold people on what they do best. Nostalgia! It sure worked. PlayStation on the other hand I feel shouldn’t be doing this. So it is safe to say that I’m going to be passing on this one. I may eat my words later but that’s my decision for now.

As always I want to know what you guys think? Are you excited about a PlayStation Classic? Are you going to pick one up? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time. 1. To play devil’s advocate to a number of your points…

The PS1 sold over 100,000,000 consoles in its lifetime. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles That’s 40 million more than the NES and 50 million more than the SNES.

For many of those people, it was their first console, just like the original NES was my first console. 20+ years later, millions of those kids have grown up and they want to revisit the worlds of Final Fantasy VII and (presumably) Metal Gear Solid just like I bought an NES Classic to relive my nostalgia for Super Mario Bros. There are arguably even more people who have a nostalgia for the PS1 than the NES/SNES due to how much bigger the PS1 install base is compared to the NES/SNES.

We already saw this happen with the Crash Bandicoot remasters.

The trilogy has (and continues to sell) incredibly well, because there’s an untapped market of 20-30 somethings who want to go back to their retro PS1 roots.

As for whether Sony should/shouldn’t do it, if they like money, of course they do it. It’s a low-effort project for them that’s essentially guaranteed to make way more money for them than what they’d put into it. There’s no reason for them not to, as it doesn’t take resources away from their PS4 work. On top of that, the primary audience for people who buy these micro consoles aren’t the same people clamoring for backwards compatibility for their modern console. They would never buy a PS4 to play PS1 games, but they’re much more likely to buy a plug-and-play micro console with the games they grew up with. It’s the same audience that ate up the NES/SNES Classic, most of whom probably have no idea what Virtual Console is.

That said, you’re absolutely right on the odd controller choice. No Dual Shocks is a weird omission.

    1. I think that nostalgia is at an all time high right now! Maybe this a fad that will go away some day. I don’t know. But that’s why people will buy this console. For nostalgia.

Now the PS1 did better than the NES, SNES, and N64 in sales. Do you think when the N64 Classic that it will out sale the PS One Classic?

Like I said before I got the PS One late in it’s life cycle. It just wouldn’t feel right without the analog sticks. That alone is making me back off! LOL! Let’s wait to see how it does come Dec. 3rd.

  2. Nostalgia will never go away. It will just move with the times. We as humans are wired to look at the things we grew up on with rose-tinted glasses. Today it’s the NES/SNES/PlayStation. We’re not far enough removed from it yet, but at some point the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii generation will be retro and nostalgia will go a long way in re-selling those products to another generation of gamers that grew up with them. The cycle will never end as long as humans have a reverence for the things we grew up with.

With regards to PS1 Classic vs. Nintendo 64 Classic, it’s probably too early to say. There are all sorts of factors that could impact the outcome of an impending mini console war runback, from price, to promotion, to maybe one of the platform holders deciding that their mini console will be a limited-edition thing. I think the X-factor here is the seemingly growing reverence for the Nintendo 64 library that has occurred over the last 20-ish years.

At the time, many (most?) gamers overlooked the Nintendo 64 because it wasn’t disc-based and/or it’s lineup of games was too kiddy in an era where being mature was the trend. Since then, that trend has passed and it seems like people have grown to appreciate those games for what they were. Doesn’t hurt that the N64 lineup also contains some of the most revolutionary games of all-time, from the blueprint for 3D platforming in Super Mario 64, to the quintessential 3D Zelda game, to the platform as a whole redefining local multiplayer with four controller ports and killer games to support it.

The potential downfall to the Nintendo 64 Classic is Rare. A large chunk of everyone’s favourite N64 games, from Goldeneye, to Banjo-Kazooie, to Diddy Kart Racing, require some sign-off by Microsoft in order to make that happen. Goldeneye is extra difficult, as you then have to rope in the movie studio too, which is why that game has never seen a true sequel or rerelease. I can see a world where Nintendo presses forward without the Rare stuff in order to keep money out of Microsoft’s pockets, and that could hurt the proposed N64 Classic quite a bit. If they could somehow get Goldeneye though, that would be a MASSIVE PR win….

…though I think Perfect Dark is better 😛

    1. I’m sure there are going to be a lot of people wanting to get the N64 Classic even if they didn’t own it growing up. Since we’re all adults now we control what we buy! LOL! I think Perfect Dark would be easier to get on the N64 Classic than Goldeneye personally if Microsoft were to sign off on letting Nintendo use Rare games. I’ve seen what the game list could potentially be. Check it out here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/mitchwallace/2017/11/08/n64-classic-edition-game-list-potentially-leaked-by-nintendo/#2e48dce538c4

If they put on Sin and Punishment I’m sold. But I think the downfall of the N64 in general was the lack of third party support.

      1. At the time, yes. Third party support crushed the Nintendo 64. In modern times, people aren’t looking at third party support the same way for the Nintendo 64 specifically. They want the games they know and love. Nintendo could cover much of the bases based on that Forbes list. Sin & Punishment would be a great get too. If they could get Rare, then they’ve got basically everything a mass audience would want.

….I still want WWF No Mercy though.

  3. Goodness, that $100 price point is hard to swallow. I mean, I guess that money couldn’t even get you two games if you were buying brand new ones…as you’ve stated, the value is all in nostalgia with this kind of thing. There’s only one PS1 game I’d really be itching to revisit, and I don’t anticipate them to have Legend of Legaia on there.
