Blogging live to you and yours! It’s your boy TWOTALL4UFOOL! Let me ask you all something! Could you imagine a world without a GameStop? A GameStop or any specialty video game store at all? There are other options out there where you can buy physical copies of games such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Amazon but to me there is nothing like going into GameStop (or a store similar) and purchasing a physical copy of the latest game that is out. When I’m in one I’m like a little kid in a candy store. But now with recent news that GameStop may be up for sell it’s got me wondering what a world would be like with out this company. I think that it would be bad for the gaming industry overall. and I’m going to explain why.
Now I’ll be the first to admit that GameStop is not loved by everyone. Especially a lot of the former employees that used to work for them. But the loss of this store would be getting rid of leading video game retail chain in the world. Now I’ll be the first to admit that they haven’t made the best business decisions. I think one of those is just over expanding. If you go into some areas you’ll see that there are GameStops that are literally right across the street from one another. I hate to say this but that’s just bad for business. They bought out other businesses back in the day such as EB Games and when they branded all those to GameStops they pretty much just stayed in tacked. It would’ve been a good idea to close some of the stores real close to one another but they didn’t. They did close some stores last year after bad holiday sales but they probably didn’t close enough.
Another thing that I believe is hurting GameStop (and other brick and mortar stores as well) is the rise in digital sales. How convenient is it to sit in the comfort of your home and download a game instead of getting in your car driving 15-20 minutes or however far GameStop is from your home to buy the game? For some people they find it very convenient. I personally prefer physical copies of games and here is why. Besides saving a little bit of GB space on your hard drive I have to admit that there are some games out there that people will buy that they just won’t like. They will realize that it was a bad investment and just won’t play the game anymore. In some cases people won’t want it in there home. That’s where places like GameStop come in. You can trade in used games and get cash for them or store credit. There trade prices tend to be a rip off at times but at least they will give you something. Even if it was a bad game. If you downloaded that game digitally you are pretty much stuck with that game and can’t trade it in for anything. This is why I feel it is important to keep stores like GameStop around.
One last thing I want to discuss about GameStop is the used games sell. Now sure it is good that they buy games you don’t want and resell them but I feel their business is too much based on that. It’s good that they have programs where customers can save money on used games but I feel at times that is the only incentive they give. I feel used game sales aren’t as big as they used to be and I hate to say this about GameStop but they really need to get with times when it comes to selling new games. Give the consumers a deal on a new game instead of a used one. Like a certain percentage off because we pre-ordered the game. That’s what Best Buy and Amazon does. Why can’t GameStop do that? I feel if they made their programs a little more appealing to gamers they would be in a much better state and wouldn’t be in the shape that it is in right now. It’s looking really scary for them.
We’ve already seen Toys “R” Us go out of business in the US and it sucked for a lot of people. I really don’t want to see the same happen to GameStop. So I want to know your thoughts. My husband still loves game stop he would be pretty bummed if GameStop goes way for sure. We have talked about it before and he thinks it maybe heading that way. He does use Best Buy for purchasing some games but not normally. We buy a lot of our blu rays on Amazon but he doesn’t normally order his games that way.

The digital age kind of scares me. But not all parts of the country and world have high speed internet to where all consumers can download their games. Regardless of how you feel about GameStop it would be bad for the video game industry if the store went away. I don’t like the idea of going to Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart or even Amazon to buy new games. You don’t get that same feeling because you’re not walking into a video game store. Toys “R” Us leaving the US was bad for the toy industry. I don’t want to see the same thing happen to video games.

We have Game in the UK that’s pretty similar. Whilst I do have concerns with them going out of business (in fact they almost did once) I have little sympathy as they tend to price the games quite highly. I can go to a local supermarket and get them cheaper without having to pay for parking in the town centre.
I look at the success of Limited Run Games and feel that’s the direction Game need to go in. Physical versions of digital games on a limited basis could be quite a big money spinner for them.

There definitely pros and cons to both physical copies of games vs. digital copies of games. I just favor the physical pros vs. the digital pros.

I used to go to GameStop all the time. Loved their bargain bin. I missed the days when game companies put manuals in the box. Now it just a sheet of paper advertising the dlc.
I prefer to buy physical but most of my games are digital. I have a ps4 and the digital version is often cheaper than the physical. Especially, with the flash sales.
It will be sad to see GameStop go. I think the only way they could survive to go to a digital distribution model like Steam. But, I don’t see that happening.

Yeah I miss the instruction manuals. But it’s another way for companies to cut costs. They still have some good deals. But for the most part it’s mainly on used stuff. I feel they do need to get with the times a bit. Right now they are having a sell however. Maybe you should check it out. But yeah it would be very sad to see them go.
